It’s all too easy to think about dance as recreational fitness. It helps us get strong, flexible and heathy while having fun. But for Hana Lukac who was born and raised in war-torn Yugoslavia, dance and movement was a means of mental and emotional survival. “Movement has always played a big role in my life when it came to healing and finding my way in this world,” she explains. “I found great refuge in dance from the chaos that was going on around me.”
Originally a classical dancer in her home country, Hana moved to Canada in 2004 to pursue her dream of becoming an actor. Like many fledgling artists, she waited tables in downtown Toronto. By chance, she ended up helping a friend in London, England open a new yoga studio. From there, she got more and more involved in this ancient practice and its modern Toronto community. So much so that in December 2012, she opened the doors to her very own studio: Mula Yoga.
“It turned out that I was a better yoga teacher than I was an actress!” laughs Hana. “You don't do this job to become a millionaire, you do it because it feeds your soul. Every morning, I'm excited to come to work. I love my students, my community and sharing this incredible practice with them. .”
